Scholarships

Each year Butex awards a number of scholarships to undergraduate students studying abroad for a semester or a whole academic year, and students undertaking a summer school programme, overseas work/internship/traineeship placement of varying lengths of time.

Butex scholarships are based on a calendar year and not the academic year. Students that have a placement that will take place across two calendar years will be able to apply in each year, but please note individuals can only win a Butex scholarship once.

Students must be undergraduates and be affiliated with a Butex Full Member University to be eligible to apply. Please check all the application requirements below.

We are pleased to introduce the Sustainability Abroad Scholarship!

This scholarship combines two crucial aspects of education: sustainability and global experiences. At a time when travel is now more accessible than ever, this scholarship recognises the importance of promoting sustainable practices and environmental consciousness while fostering cultural understanding and international study experiences.

By supporting students who aspire to study abroad and focus on sustainability, this scholarship encourages a deepened understanding of global environmental challenges and the exchange of innovative ideas. It recognises that sustainability is a global concern and that addressing it requires diverse perspectives and cross-cultural collaboration.

This scholarship will encourage students to broaden their minds, immerse themselves in different cultures and learn about different approaches to sustainability and experiences, fostering a global network of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a sustainable future both at home and internationally. Ultimately, this scholarship will empower students to think about the repercussions of their actions and how they can contribute to making travel more sustainable and viable for the future.

The value of each scholarship is £500. This will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university, or confirmation of a placement already completed has been received.

BUTEX will also make a special award in honour of our late Treasurer, the Tony Emmerson Award. This scholarship will be awarded in the event of an American Studies student being successful in the competition. This award will also be for £500.

Are you eligible?

The Scholarship is open to all undergraduate students who are affiliated to a Butex Full Member institution.

You may be affiliated as an incoming or an outgoing study abroad student.

If you are not sure whether either your home or your host institution are Butex-affiliated, please check our list of Butex members.

To be eligible to apply:

  • You must have been offered, currently undertaking or already completed, a study abroad or exchange placement or a summer school/work/internship/traineeship placement.
  • Your placement takes place in the calendar year in which you apply.
  • Your placement must be for either one semester or one year if it is a study abroad experience.
  • Summer School, Work, Internship or Traineeship placements must be overseas and do not need to be a specific length of time.
  • You must be enrolled in your undergraduate course when you apply for, and receive a scholarship. Once students graduate they are not eligible to receive a scholarship.

Provisions  of the Award

Applicants are not permitted to submit more than one entry. Also remember to check that your placement is eligible for this award.

By entering the Butex scholarship competition applicants agree to the Butex Manager contacting their Butex institution to confirm registration at the host institution. If awarded a scholarship you agree to provide a photograph of yourself together with a short statement about the benefits of studying/working abroad. Please note, this may be used by Butex for future publicity. 

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application as we appreciate the time and effort that goes into each application. The decision of the Butex selection committee is final and Butex will not enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants.

Think outside the box! We are looking for originality and creativity.  

We want to hear about your commitment to eco-friendly practices during your study abroad experience. Do your research with regards to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and share specific measures you have already taken or plan to take to promote sustainable travel.

We want to share your experiences and knowledge with others to inspire a broader commitment to sustainable travel practices among your peers. Ultimately, demonstrate your dedication to a cleaner environment and making your study abroad placement as sustainable as possible.

Remember to be sincere and specific in your answers, providing real-life examples whenever possible.

A total maximum of 80 points will be awarded as described below in the marking criteria.
