A Commitment to Sustainability During my Exchange to Edinburgh

Travelling sustainably is a responsibility I embrace as a global citizen. Earth’s natural features and culture belong to not just humanity but to all life, including future generations. If we fail to protect ecosystems and historic sites today, we rob tomorrow’s explorers of the awe and inspiration travel ignites, and take the right of other species to live comfortably. During my exchange in the University of Edinburgh, I will commit to sustainable travel practices that minimize environmental harm, setting a positive example for my peers.

To reduce my environmental footprint, I will avoid car transportation, walking or cycling if possible. Using public transit such as buses, trams, and trains will allow me to navigate in and between cities, reducing my carbon emissions. Additionally, when I travel with others, I will advocate for eco-friendly forms of transportation, while encouraging sustainable practices such as using reusable water bottles and avoiding single-use plastics. By choosing accommodations within easy reach of attractions, local amenities, and campus, I will be able to shorten commutes, support neighborhood businesses, and avoid needless car trips.

My ideas align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. As mentioned, I promote the use of public transit, avoiding emissions when possible. I will also focus on using reusable goods and will donate things once I am done with them instead of throwing them away. Additionally, I will make connections with people in the UK regarding sustainable business and technology to foster global connections. These connections allow me to work globally on sustainability, peace, justice, and human rights, especially pertaining to business and technology(my fields of education). Indeed, these goals strongly align with UN’s SDG, and will allow me to live within environmentally sustainable means.

In addition, I will continue to apply sustainable practices daily. Simple measures such as turning off lights, unplugging chargers, and adjusting heating settings when rooms are unoccupied will lead to significant energy savings. I will source study supplies, kitchenware and bedroom supplies from others who no longer need them, extending each item’s lifecycle and reducing waste. At the end of my stay, I will donate these materials to the community or fellow peers rather than discarding them. Additionally, I will avoid using single-use goods and opt for digital resources, composting organic scraps, and participating in city cleanups and environmental advocacy wherever possible.

By immersing myself at the University of Edinburgh, I will deepen my understanding of environmental policy, sustainable design, and climate resilience. I intend to work with peers on educating myself in environmental stewardship and furthering my commitment to the UN’s SDG. By educating myself and participating in hands-on advocacy, I aim to improve my sustainable environment practices.

Through conscientious travel choices, active SDG advocacy, and eco-centric daily habits, my international placement will further my commitment to sustainability. I aspire to leave Edinburgh with new knowledge, lasting partnerships, and a legacy of responsible exploration, so that future generations can continue to marvel at the world’s wonders just as we do today.
