As a Mechanical Engineering student at Newcastle University, I had the chance to take part in a virtual exchange course where I had to analyse a document and turn it into a PowerPoint presentation, which I then presented to students from around the world. It was a great opportunity to develop my communication skills and work with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
After completing that programme, I was accepted to attend a summer school at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Where I’ll be studying three courses, one in mathematics and two others focused on sustainability in engineering and modern design. These subjects really interest me because they relate to how engineering can be made smarter and more environmentally responsible.
Of course, travelling to Hong Kong means taking a long flight, which isn’t the most eco-friendly option. But I’m doing what I can to reduce my impact. I’ll be flying from Newcastle, the nearest airport to where I live, and I’ll take the train and metro to get there instead of driving.
Once I arrive, I’ll continue to travel sustainably. Hong Kong is known for having one of the most efficient public transport systems in the world the MTR trains are reliable, clean and cover a wide area. I’m also looking forward to seeing the famous double-decker buses. The university has even organised an activity on the train to help us learn more about the city’s transport system and how it supports sustainability, which I think is a brilliant idea.
Outside of transport, I’ll be making small changes to reduce waste. I’m bringing a reusable water bottle, tote bag, and cutlery so I don’t have to rely on single-use plastics. I’ll also be mindful of where I eat and shop avoiding big fast food chains and instead supporting local, lower-impact businesses.
I’m keen to explore how engineering can be used to solve real-world problems without damaging the planet. It’s something I hope to carry forward into my future studies and career.
This experience also ties in with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). I know I can’t change the world on my own, but I believe that small, conscious actions still make a difference.
So yes, I’m going far. But I’m going with purpose. I’m going to learn, to grow, and to do my bit to respect the planet along the way.
