Given that it can also put a strain on the planet’s resources, travel broadens perspectives, promotes cultural exchange, and propels personal growth. As an avid advocate of sustainability, I think that in order to protect our planet for coming generations, travel must be in line with environmental responsibility. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), are in line with my dedication to environmentally friendly travel. To make sure that my overseas placement is as long-lasting as possible, I have taken proactive measures.
Making thoughtful decisions is necessary for sustainable travel in order to reduce the impact on the environment. I give low-carbon transport options top priority before starting my overseas placement. For example, whenever possible, I choose trains or buses over aeroplanes for regional travel because they drastically cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. When I can’t avoid flying, I choose airlines that offer carbon offset programs and make investments in verified offset projects, like Go-Green projects, renewable energy projects, or reforestation projects, to offset my carbon footprint. By reducing the effects of climate change, these initiatives support SDG 13.
Travelling sustainably also requires careful consideration of lodging options. Throughout my placement, I will look for hotels or hostels with eco-certification that use waste reduction, water conservation, and energy-efficient practices. For instance, I select lodgings that support SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by using solar energy or having recycling initiatives. By booking accommodations at locally owned guesthouses, I also help local communities and ensure that the destination’s economic benefits stay there, supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
I use a minimalist packing strategy to further encourage sustainability, lowering the weight of my bags to use less fuel while travelling. To reduce single-use plastics and contribute to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by lowering ocean pollution, I bring reusable items like cloth bags, cutlery, and water bottles. By honouring regional ecosystems, abstaining from actions that endanger wildlife, and taking part in conservation projects like beach clean-ups or tree-planting campaigns that promote SDG 15, I also practise responsible tourism.
I use carbon footprint calculators to keep track of my travel-related emissions and set quantifiable goals to gradually lower them in order to ensure a cleaner environment. By posting about my experiences on social media, I also promote eco-friendly travel by encouraging others to follow in my footsteps. By encouraging group action, these initiatives support SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
By taking these steps, I hope to establish my overseas placement as a sustainable travel model. I want to embrace the transformative potential of travel while also making a positive impact on a cleaner, more equitable world by coordinating my actions with the UN SDGs.
