Wings of Change: Healing the Earth’s Seoul

The sky does not judge how we rise and move across it,
But we should.
As I board my flight to Seoul, South Korea,
For a summer school of discovery and growth.
I carry more than just luggage.
I carry intention –
Stitched between passport stamps and hope.
This is more than a flight;
It is a vow woven into the sky.

From London to Helsinki, then Seoul,
Each step mapped with care.
I chose Finnair not for convenience,
But for commitment:
To fuel efficiency, quieter skies,
To forests in Indonesia, Wetlands in Pakistan.
The road to net zero is long,
But not ignored.

Flying is not yet kind to the Earth.
Aviation emissions carve scars deeper than clouds.
I have not yet offset my carbon footprint in numbers,
But I will in choices –
With every step ashore made softer than the one before.

In Seoul, the hum of the subways will carry me
Beneath neon constellations, replacing taxis.
A reusable bottle in my bag,
Chopsticks in my pocket,
With intention in my stride.

Apps like Too Good to Go,
Will help me fight food waste with my fork.
With Naver Map, I’ll follow paths
To plant-based cafes and Zero-waste havens
tucked between palaces and parks.
JYBE will guide me to restaurants
That serve values with every meal,
And I will move through the city with Seoul Bike,
Where motion leave no mark.

Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action,
My journey is not just about seeing,
But learning, respecting,
And giving back.
Climate Action begins in choices:
How we move, what we eat,
What we support with our presence.

At Yonsei International Summer School,
I’ll meet minds from other skies.
Together, we’ll share stories –
Of challenge, of change,
Of what sustainability looks like
In different languages.

This is more than study abroad.
It’s learning to walk gently,
Even when flying far.
It is proof that global connection
Does not have to come at global cost.

We cannot yet fly without consequence.
But we can fly with care and responsibility,
We can land with purpose.

This summer, I offer my journey
Not as a perfect path,
But as a conscious one.

A beginning, A step.
A flight toward a future
Where each journey heals,
And lifts the weight of our harm
From the Earth’s shoulders –
Leaving her lighter,
And more whole than before.
