Sustainable steps; Making every journey count

As part of my upcoming study abroad placement in Germany, I’m not only excited to immerse myself in a new culture, I’m committed to making the experience as sustainable as possible. Germany has a strong reputation for its green public transport network, efficient recycling systems, and cycle-friendly cities. I plan to take full advantage of local trams, trains, and bike routes to keep my travel low impact.

Traveling is a new breath of fresh air to me; it is even fresher when every step I take is about make a move towards sustainability. I feel lighter than air; it really is a rush. A rush that is both fulfilling and necessary because without sustainably, travelling is futile. Travelling becomes another word for overconsumption.

Sure, you can ignore sustainability and travel with ignorance but that leads to a hollow experience. Travel is more than booking the cheapest flight and stuffing your suitcase fast fashion. A true experience is learnt from the quiet humble moments; travelling in their local train, experiencing the serenity of the journey, supporting independent brands and learning to appreciate more by living with less.

A wise wizard once said, “Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.” That quote has stayed with me as a reminder that sustainability is a shared goal. It transcends our differences and brings us together in protecting what we all cherish: our planet.

My actions align with three key UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 12 (sustainable consumption), Goal 13 (climate action), and Goal 17 (global cooperation).

Goal 12 is reflected in my everyday choices. I avoid fast fashion, reduce plastic waste, and support local artisans. These actions reduce environmental harm while empowering local communities. Their creativity, passion, and brilliance never fail to inspire me.

Our senses connect us to the world, and Goal 13 reminds us to take action. Walking and using public transport are more than sustainable choices — they’re ways to experience a place with all my senses. Walking isn’t just about hitting a step count; it fills my soul. I hear the rhythm of daily life, breathe in the scent of street food and nature, and return home with heartful memories far more meaningful than souvenirs- leaving a lasting imprint on my heart. Travel is my passion, and sustainability is how I protect it.

Goal 17 brings it all together. Sustainability is part of a global movement and by making conscious decisions, it connects me to others to build a cleaner and brighter future. While these choices may be small, the effect of this is much larger than we can comprehend. The ripple effect of these choices is powerful, across borders, we share one goal.

To support my efforts, I’ll use DB Navigator, Too Good To Go, Good On You, Refill, and follow Zero Waste Germany to minimize waste and travel sustainably.

Together let’s make a difference.
