Traveling light: A greener path to global learning

As I prepare for my exchange program at UT Austin, I am not only excited about the academic and cultural exposure but also conscious of the environmental footprint such international experiences can leave behind. I firmly believe that global learning and sustainability can go hand in hand, and I am committed to ensuring my time abroad aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Climate Action (SDG 13), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).

To begin with, I booked a direct flight from my home country to Austin to reduce emissions caused by stopovers. I also chose to offset my travel emissions through a certified carbon offset program supporting renewable energy and reforestation efforts. These actions, while small, reflect my intent to be a mindful traveler.

In Austin, I have prioritized eco-conscious living arrangements. I selected accommodation within walking distance to campus, which will allow me to walk, bike, or use CapMetro public transit, avoiding the use of high-emission private transport. The city’s bicycle-friendly infrastructure complements this decision perfectly.

Day to day, I follow sustainable habits such as carrying a reusable water bottle, bags, and utensils, and limiting my use of single-use plastics. I plan to shop locally—supporting farmers’ markets and thrift stores instead of fast fashion or global chains. In my accommodation, I will be mindful of energy and water use, turning off appliances when not in use and avoiding unnecessary waste.

Moreover, I aim to engage with student sustainability organizations at UT Austin, such as the Campus Environmental Center, to learn from ongoing initiatives and actively participate in community projects. This not only helps the local environment but also broadens my understanding of grassroots sustainability efforts in a different cultural context.

For me, this exchange is more than an academic placement—it’s a chance to practice and promote sustainable living while being immersed in a new environment. I believe travel should leave more behind than carbon emissions; it should leave connections, learning, and positive footprints.

By making informed choices and contributing actively during my stay, I hope to represent my home country as a responsible global citizen and return with not just academic insights, but also a deeper, practical understanding of sustainability in action.
