Travel with Purpose: Aligning Global Experience with Climate Responsibility

Travel offers a unique opportunity to connect with cultures, exchange ideas, and expand our understanding of the world. As I prepare for my international placement in Hong Kong, I am committed to ensuring that my experience supports not just personal and academic growth, but also environmental sustainability in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

Hong Kong, a vibrant global city with a strong public transport system and growing environmental awareness, presents many opportunities to travel and live sustainably. I plan to take full advantage of the city’s MTR network, trams, and ferries, avoiding unnecessary car travel or short-haul flights within the region. By relying on low-emission public transit, I hope to minimize my carbon footprint while engaging with the city in a more local, grounded way.

During my stay, I intend to live and travel mindfully:
•Zero waste practices: I will bring reusable bags, bottles, and utensils, and avoid single-use plastics—especially important in a city like Hong Kong, where waste reduction is becoming a community priority.

•Supporting local sustainability: I aim to support Hong Kong’s wet markets and local food producers over large supermarket chains, thereby reducing packaging and supporting sustainable consumption.

Beyond personal habits, I hope to engage with sustainability at an academic and social level. I plan to participate in university-led environmental initiatives, such as green clubs or volunteering with local environmental NGOs like Green Sense or The Nature Conservancy Hong Kong. These groups offer hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and community action.

I also plan to document and share my sustainability journey while abroad—through blog posts, student forums, and social media—to inspire fellow students and raise awareness about how we can all travel more responsibly.
In conclusion, I believe sustainability should be woven into the fabric of every international experience. With careful planning, local engagement, and a strong sense of responsibility, I intend to ensure that my time in Hong Kong contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable, and globally connected future. thanks for reading<3
