I can picture it already: getting dropped off at the airport, music blasting through my headphones, heart beating a million miles a minute yet ready to conquer my next adventure. When the world offers us an opportunity to travel, I believe we should make the most of it. In my opinion, travel is more than sightseeing—it is about the exchange of cultures, personalities, and stories. With this comes great responsibility: we must embrace the adventure while ensuring others can do the same. As I started to prepare for my semester abroad, I made it a personal goal to expand my horizons in the most environmentally sustainable way possible. My first hurdle was travel itself: how can I cross 4,000 miles sustainably? While keeping finances in mind, I booked the most direct flight I could to reduce the emissions caused by additional take-offs and landings encountered in layovers. From the airport to my accommodation, I’ll use the shared transport resources provided by the University of Oklahoma. Living on campus means my daily commute will mostly be on foot—the most eco-friendly option. I also hope to encourage those around me to walk with me, promoting both health and sustainability. For longer journeys, buses and shared transport will help keep my individual carbon footprint lower. In conjunction with travel, it’s the small everyday habits that add up and make the most significant impact. Simple habits like carrying a reusable water bottle, avoiding single-use plastics, and bringing a reusable bag make a difference. I aim to inspire my peers to adopt these habits too. I’m eager to explore local markets, choosing seasonal produce and supporting small businesses, aligning with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. When it comes to fashion, I plan to limit spending on fast fashion, instead opting for second-hand or sustainably made clothing. I’ll repurpose clothes I already own and wear layers in winter, reducing waste and saving space for my return journey.Progress in sustainability isn’t achieved alone—it thrives in teamwork and shared knowledge. As mentioned, I aspire to spread my sustainable practices to those around me, not only on campus but also through social media. Equally, I hope to learn from others, expanding my understanding and making further improvements—reflecting SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Even though these habits may seem small, together they contribute to SDG 13: Climate Action. As I imagine myself stepping onto the plane—music still playing, heart still racing—I carry more than luggage: I carry intention. My aspiration is that this adventure isn’t just a physical journey across continents, but a journey towards a greener, more mindful future with further knowledge and experiences.
