Travel has always felt like a gateway to learning, not just about new places, but about my own role in the world. As someone who cares deeply about the planet, I’ve realized that how I move through the world matters just as much as where I go. For me, travel and sustainability go hand in hand. I want to explore new cultures, communities, and landscapes, but I want to do it in a way that leaves a positive footprint, not a carbon one.
One recent focus of mine has been lowering my consumerism and finding serotonin spikes in saving instead of spending. In preparation for this experience, the old me might have run out to buy a bunch of new clothes and products just to feel satisfied and excited. Now, I’m prioritizing what I already own, thrifting for the few pieces I actually need, and being more mindful about what I bring with me. It feels good to be intentional, and it’s building habits that are both healthy and sustainable.
I prioritize low-impact transportation whenever possible. That might mean taking trains instead of flights for shorter distances, or walking and cycling in local communities. I also pack light to reduce waste and avoid unnecessary purchases, and I travel with reusable essentials like a water bottle, cutlery, and tote bags. I research eco-conscious accommodations and try to support businesses that care about their environmental impact.
Sustainability isn’t just about habits, though. It’s about aligning with global goals. I actively connect my actions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action). Growing up in an agriculture family, supporting local farmers is already part of my lifestyle. I avoid large corporations whenever I can, and I’ve already started researching ways to continue supporting farmers in my new Bristol community. These small shifts not only help protect the environment, but they also support local economies and end up saving money in the long run.
At the end of the day, I believe the best kind of travel broadens your perspective while deepening your responsibility. My goal is to experience the world without harming it, and hopefully, leave each place better than I found it.
