Leaving Lighter Footprints: Traveling With Purpose, Not Just a Passport

From the moment I received confirmation of my research placement at Oklahoma State University, I knew that this opportunity would be more than academic, it would be a chance to explore, to learn, and to travel responsibly.

Travel is often seen as a luxury, but I see it as a responsibility. As a global citizen, I believe how we move through the world matters just as much as where we go. With climate change accelerating and communities across the globe facing environmental stress, especially in areas affected by extreme weather, like parts of Oklahoma, it’s no longer acceptable to travel without considering our impact.

To ensure my placement aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goals 12 (Responsible Consumption), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), I am committed to making my journey as sustainable as possible. While transatlantic air travel is necessary for this placement, I will offset my carbon emissions via many ways. Within the U.S., I plan to use public transportation, cycle, or carpool wherever possible to reduce local travel emissions.

On a day-to-day level, I will embrace low-impact living: I will use reusable essentials like a water bottle and a shopping bag and I’ve committed to avoiding single-use plastics. Sustainability isn’t just about the environment—it’s about people and partnerships. I intend to support local businesses, engage respectfully with the community, and share sustainable practices with fellow students and researchers. As part of my research placement, I also aim to explore how our work intersects with environmental issues—whether through energy use in the lab, waste reduction, or responsible data practices.

These actions may seem small, but they reflect a broader mindset. Sustainability is not about being perfect; it’s about being aware, adaptable, and committed. It’s about asking, “How can I reduce harm and leave this place better than I found it?”

Travel has always had the power to broaden my mind, but sustainability gives my journey purpose. As I head to Oklahoma State University, I do so not just with academic goals in mind, but with the intention to leave lighter footprints—on the earth and in the lives of those I meet.
