Travel, awareness, and moving towards sustainability

Travel has always been something I enjoy, whether it is discovering new places, meeting different people, or simply experiencing a change of environment. But over time, I have started to see travel in a different way. It is not just about moving from one place to another, but also about the impact those choices have on the environment.

When I first came here, I travelled by ferry and also used my car. At that time, I did not really think much about the environmental side. It felt normal and convenient, and that was my main focus. Later, after learning more about climate change and how transport contributes to carbon emissions, I started to realise that these choices actually have a bigger impact than I had thought. Ferries and cars, especially when used for long distances, can contribute quite a lot to pollution.

That realisation made me reflect more on how I travel. When I went back home during the Easter holidays, I chose to travel by plane. Even though I now understand that flying also has a significant environmental impact, it made me realise something important: sustainability is not always about being perfect, but about becoming more aware and making better decisions where possible.

Since then, I have made small but meaningful changes in my daily life. I now try to walk whenever I can, especially for short distances. It is not only better for the environment, but it also helps me stay active and clear my mind. I also use a bicycle quite often, which feels like a simple but effective way to reduce pollution while also enjoying the journey itself. These small habits have made me realise that individual actions really do add up over time.

Since then, I want to continue building on these habits. I aim to rely more on public transport and other low-carbon options whenever I travel. I also want to become more mindful of the environmental impact behind each decision, including things like carbon offsetting when flying is necessary. At the same time, I hope to encourage people around me to think more about sustainable travel as well, even in small ways.

These ideas connect with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11, SDG 12, and SDG 13, which focus on sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and climate action. For me, this is not just about global goals, but about everyday choices that shape a more responsible way of living.

Overall, this experience has taught me that sustainability is a journey. It is about learning, adjusting, and doing better when you can, even through small actions.
