When I received the opportunity to study International Law in Switzerland, I saw it as more than an academic journey. It became a chance to demonstrate how international mobility can be combined with environmental responsibility. As students, we have a unique opportunity to become global citizens while protecting the planet we all share.
Travelling abroad inevitably has an environmental impact, but sustainability is about making conscious choices before, during, and after the journey. For my placement in Lucerne, I have committed to reducing my carbon footprint wherever possible. While international travel is necessary, I intend to minimise additional emissions by avoiding unnecessary flights during my year abroad and instead making use of Switzerland’s extensive public transport network.
Switzerland is renowned for its efficient rail system, and I plan to travel primarily by train, bus, walking, and cycling. Choosing public transport over private vehicles supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which promotes sustainable cities and communities. Living close to the university will further reduce the need for regular transport and encourage a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Sustainability extends beyond travel. During my placement, I intend to reduce waste by using reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers. I will prioritise digital documents rather than printing where possible, which is particularly relevant as a law student who regularly works with large volumes of reading material. These small actions contribute to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
I also hope to support local businesses and engage with the local community. Purchasing locally sourced products reduces transportation emissions while contributing to the local economy. Learning from different cultures can help us understand how sustainability practices vary across countries and inspire positive changes when we return home.
Studying International Law has shown me that many environmental challenges transcend national borders. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development require international cooperation. By participating in an international placement responsibly, I hope to reflect the principles I study in the classroom and demonstrate that individual actions can contribute to collective solutions.
Most importantly, I believe sustainability is not about perfection but progress. Every decision, whether choosing a train over a car, carrying a reusable bottle, or reducing waste, represents a commitment to protecting future generations. Through my placement in Lucerne, I aim to embrace the opportunities of international education while remaining mindful of my environmental responsibilities.
By aligning my actions with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 11, 12, and 13 (Climate Action), I hope to ensure that my international experience leaves a positive impact not only on my academic and personal development but also on the world around me.
This placement will allow me to grow as a future legal professional while demonstrating that global mobility and environmental sustainability can work hand in hand.
