There is no denying that travel comes with numerous opportunities for development, education, and exchange of culture, but at the same time, it has a significant impact on our environment. In starting my overseas adventure, I want to see not only the benefits I can get from traveling but also do my best to reduce my environmental impact. The sustainability approach that I take in my travels is well rooted in my awareness of the fact that we should care about the preservation of the planet for our future generations because we all belong to one community.
In order to make my trip and stay the most sustainable possible, there are certain green initiatives that I have taken. First of all, when it comes to traveling to the UK, I am using the most direct routes to decrease the carbon footprint. Although flights always emit CO2, selecting an efficient route is one of the main actions to take. Secondly, during my stay in Birmingham, I will use public means of transport to move around the city and throughout the UK as much as possible. My daily commute to the university will consist of walking, thus leading a healthy and CO2 emission-free life.
In addition to transportation, I am determined to change my lifestyle for the better. In particular, I am going to minimize my waste generation through the use of reusable bottles, cups, and bags. The use of these items correlates with UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 -Responsible Consumption and Production. Moreover, I am going to conserve water and energy: turn off electrical appliances and lights whenever possible, and use less hot water in my bathroom routines.
As part of my sustainability efforts, I plan to become an active participant in any activities aimed at sustainability promotion that are currently taking place on the campus of the University of Birmingham. By learning from others’ experience and helping out where needed, I am going to contribute to sustainable development and protect the environment. My ultimate aim is to live sustainably on the international placement level.
