Making My Study Abroad Journey Sustainable.
My name is Olayemi Olumuyi, and as I prepare for my study abroad exchange program, I want my footprint to be one of responsibility rather than pollution. For me, travelling is more than just visiting new places. It is about learning, connecting with people from different backgrounds, and gaining experiences that help me grow. I believe every journey allows us to learn something new, but it also comes with the responsibility to protect the world we live in.
As a Computer Science student at Lancaster University Ghana, I have developed a strong interest in how technology can be used to solve problems and improve lives. Studying abroad would allow me to expand my knowledge, experience a different culture, and learn from new environments. I hope to bring back these experiences and use them to create positive change in my community.
I believe technology already plays an important role in sustainable travel through platforms that help travelers reduce waste, choose greener transport options, support local communities, and make environmentally responsible decisions, such as Google Maps, which helps travelers choose public transport, walking, and cycling routes, and in some locations, more fuel-efficient routes. https://maps.oogle.com/.
Citymapper helps users find efficient public transportation options in major cities, reducing reliance on private vehicles. https://citymapper.com/
OLIO is an app created to help reduce waste and support local communities by connecting communities to share unused food and household items, encouraging reuse. https://olioapp.com/en/
My sustainable travel idea is represented by a passport that transforms into a green pathway connecting different countries. Along this path, nature grows, clean energy is used, and technology works together with the environment. This shows my belief that we can explore the world while still taking care of it. I plan to support sustainable travel by making responsible choices such as reducing waste, using digital resources, choosing environmentally friendly transportation when possible, and respecting the places and communities I visit. I also believe technology can help us find smarter and more sustainable ways to travel in the future.
The BUTEX Scholarship would be a great opportunity for me to grow academically and personally. It would allow me to experience the world from a different perspective, connect with people from different cultures, and become a better student and a global citizen.
I believe the true value of a journey lies not only in the places we visit but also in the positive impact we leave behind. I hope my journey abroad will inspire others to travel responsibly and contribute to a more sustainable future.
