The first thing I will pack for my exchange semester at Oxford Brookes University is not my laptop, my textbooks, or even my umbrella. It is a mindset to explore the world with curiosity, gratitude, and responsibility. People often say that a journey begins when the plane takes off. I disagree. A journey begins with a decision: the decision to learn rather than simply observe, to contribute rather than consume, and to leave a place better than you found it.
Studying abroad has always been one of my greatest ambitions. As a law student, I look forward to experiencing a different legal system, challenging my own perspectives, and learning alongside people from different backgrounds. However, I am also aware that the opportunity to study abroad is a privilege. Millions of young people around the world are still denied access to education, and many communities continue to face challenges caused by inequality, poverty, and environmental pressures.
When I imagine my life in Oxford, I do not imagine rushing from one attraction to another or simply collecting photographs. I imagine cycling to lectures through streets shaped by centuries of history, carrying a reusable coffee cup as I discover independent cafés, and walking through parks where ordinary moments become lasting memories. The most meaningful experiences are rarely found from the back seat of an Uber. They are found by slowing down, walking a little further, noticing a little more, and allowing a city to reveal itself naturally.
To me, sustainability is not about making one perfect decision. It is about thousands of small choices made with awareness. It is choosing public transport over convenience, reducing unnecessary waste, supporting local businesses, and being mindful of the resources I consume. These actions may seem insignificant individually, but they represent the kind of traveler I want to be, someone who takes more than memories from a place, but leaves behind respect and appreciation.
During my time at Oxford Brookes, I hope to embrace the principles behind the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by becoming part of a community that values education, responsibility, and cooperation. Through my studies, conversations with others, and everyday choices, I want to contribute to a more sustainable future where opportunities are created not only for my generation but for those who follow.
As a future lawyer, I believe sustainability extends beyond the environment. It is also about justice, equality, and creating systems that allow communities to thrive. My exchange will allow me to understand different perspectives and appreciate how international cooperation can help address global challenges.
When I return home, I hope my suitcase will not be filled with souvenirs, but with new perspectives, lifelong friendships, and habits that remain with me long after my exchange has ended. A passport may permit us to cross borders, but our values decide how we cross them. If I can leave Oxford with a lighter environmental footprint and a deeper sense of responsibility, then my journey will have been truly worthwhile.
