Studying at the University of Warwick has made me appreciate the responsibility that comes with international mobility. As I undertake my voluntary internship in Harare, Zimbabwe, I want my experience to be defined not only by what I learn, but also by how responsibly I travel, live, and contribute to the communities around me.
As an international student, I understand that travel has environmental consequences. While travelling between the UK and Zimbabwe is necessary for my studies and internship, I believe sustainability is shaped by the choices we make throughout the journey rather than by a single action. For this reason, I seek to minimise waste, travel efficiently, and make environmentally conscious decisions wherever possible.
During my internship, I intend to rely on public transport, walking, or shared transport options whenever practical. I routinely use reusable water bottles and shopping bags, avoid unnecessary single-use plastics, and prioritise digital documents over printing. Although these choices may seem small individually, their collective impact reflects a commitment to responsible consumption and production, one of the key principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
My placement in Harare also offers an opportunity to contribute to sustainability beyond environmental considerations. Sustainability is equally about strengthening communities and creating opportunities that have a lasting positive impact. Through my voluntary work, I hope to support initiatives that benefit local people while learning from their experiences and perspectives. Zimbabwe has taught me the value of resourcefulness, adaptability, and community support.
As a student, I am particularly interested in how education, innovation, and technology can contribute to sustainable development. Exposure to different environments in both the UK and Zimbabwe allows me to observe how similar challenges can require different solutions depending on local circumstances. These insights will help me become a more thoughtful global citizen and a more effective professional in the future.
This international experience represents more than travel between two countries. It is an opportunity to connect ideas, cultures, and perspectives. By bringing knowledge gained at Warwick into my work in Zimbabwe, and by taking lessons learned in Zimbabwe back to the UK, I hope to create a meaningful exchange that benefits both communities.
Sustainability is about leaving a positive impact that extends beyond our time in a particular place. As I complete my internship in Harare, my goal is to ensure that my international experience contributes not only to my personal and academic growth but also to the broader effort to create a more sustainable and connected world.
