When I was offered the opportunity to study Computer Science at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), I saw it as much more than a chance to study abroad. It is an opportunity to experience a different culture, learn from another education system, and grow as a person. At the same time, I know that travelling across the world has an environmental impact, so I believe it is important to make responsible choices before, during, and after my exchange.
Although flying from the UK to South Korea is unavoidable, I see that as only one part of the journey. Once I arrive, I plan to live as sustainably as I can. I will be staying in university accommodation, which means I can rely on public transport, walk around campus, and avoid unnecessary travel. South Korea has an excellent transport system, and I intend to use buses and the metro instead of taxis whenever possible. Small choices like carrying a reusable water bottle, using reusable shopping bags, reducing food waste, and buying only what I genuinely need may seem insignificant on their own, but together they make a real difference.
As a Computer Science student, sustainability is also something I think about from a technological perspective. Modern technology, artificial intelligence, and smart city systems all have the potential to reduce energy consumption, improve transport networks, and make everyday life more efficient. I hope that studying at GIST will give me a better understanding of how technology can contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action.
Coming from Ukraine and now studying in the United Kingdom has already shown me how valuable international experiences can be. Every country approaches challenges differently, and I believe there is just as much to learn outside the classroom as inside it. I hope to bring back not only new academic knowledge but also practical ideas about sustainability that I can apply in my own life and share with others at the University of York.
I know that AI currently uses a lot of energy and can sometimes create more environmental problems instead of solving them. However, I also believe it can help us find more sustainable ways of doing things, from improving transport to reducing wasted energy and resources. I hope that during my studies I can learn more about this area and eventually take part in finding practical solutions that make technology more helpful to the environment rather than harmful.
