Studying abroad is something I have been looking forward to for a long time, but it has also made me think about the impact that travelling can have on the environment. I know that flying internationally creates a large carbon footprint, so I think it is important to make environmentally friendly choices wherever I can. Although I can’t completely eliminate my impact, I believe that making small, thoughtful choices throughout my placement can still make a difference.
Since I will be spending the semester in Leeds, I want to make the most of this experience by fully immersing myself in the community instead of treating it like a vacation. Staying in one place for several months means I won’t be taking multiple flights throughout the semester, which helps reduce my overall environmental impact. I also plan to use public transportation, walk, or bike whenever possible instead of relying on taxis or uber. I think walking is one of the best ways to explore a new city, and using public transit is both more affordable and more environmentally friendly.
Living on my own will also make me more aware of how much energy and water I use each day. I plan to turn off lights when I leave my room, unplug electronics when they are not being used, and avoid wasting electricity whenever possible. I will also try to keep my showers short and only do laundry when I have a full load to reduce both water and energy use. These are habits I already try to practice at home, and I want to continue them while I am abroad.
Another goal I have is to reduce food waste. Since I will be buying my own groceries and cooking for myself, I plan to shop with a grocery list and only buy what I know I will use. Meal planning will help me avoid wasting food while also helping me stay within my budget as a student. I also plan to use leftovers instead of throwing food away and carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, shopping bags, and food containers to reduce my use of single-use plastics.
As a Medical Sciences student, I have learned that the health of our environment is closely connected to the health of people and communities. Climate change and pollution affect everyone’s well-being, which is why I think it is important to do my part, even through small everyday actions. During my placement, I hope to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by reducing waste, choosing environmentally friendly transportation, and making responsible choices in my daily life.
Overall, I want this experience to be about more than just studying abroad. I hope it helps me build sustainable habits that I can continue long after I return home. By being mindful of how I travel, use resources, and reduce waste, I hope to make my international placement as sustainable as possible while showing respect for both the environment and the community that is welcoming me.
