Stories Found Along the Way

One of my absolute favourite things to do in the world is vintage and thrift shopping. I love finding items with a story hidden behind them, whether if it is just a well-worn book, a unique piece of clothing, or a small souvenir that has already lived a life before reaching my palms. This simple habit has taught me that sustainability is not all about sacrifice but instead it is about making thoughtful choices. As someone who is from Malaysia and is preparing to study in the United Kingdom, I see this opportunity way more than just an academic journey but a chance presented to me to learn how to live more sustainably while experiencing a new culture.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have moulded my approach, particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. With the UK’s advanced public transport networks, recycling systems, and greener urban planning, it makes it an ideal place for me to develop more sustainable habits away from home.
One of the commitments that I have decided to make during my stay in the UK is to rely mainly on public transportation rather than taxis or renting a car, exploring everything from historic sites to scenic countrysides. Travelling by train will not only allow me to appreciate the UK’s natural wonders but also have a lower-carbon footprint compared to driving or flying. Walking shorter journeys whenever possible also presents me a chance to take in and experience local communities of a different culture more closely.
In Malaysia, I always practice a “reuse first” mindset in my daily life, carrying a thermos water bottle with me that keeps my drinks hot or cold throughout the day, reducing my reliance on disposable bottles. At the same time, I also carry reusable items such as shopping bags and food containers to minimise waste in my everyday life.
Vintage thrifting plays an undeniably important role in my sustainability journey. I plan to visit local charity shops and vintage markets for winter clothing, books, home essentials, and unique souvenirs instead of purchasing new items during my 3 months stay in the UK. This supports SDG 12 by extending the life cycle of products, reducing textile waste, and encouraging responsible consumption. I also hope to be able to share some of my favourite thrift finds with my friends back in Malaysia, showing and sharing with them that that sustainable shopping can be affordable, stylish, and enjoyable.
Sustainability on the other hand also means supporting local communities. So, I intend to visit local markets, and small businesses. At the same time recording and sharing my experiences and practical sustainability tips in UK on social media like XiaoHongShu, I hope that by doing so I am encouraging others to make small but meaningful changes in their own travels. Through this experience, I hope to explore the UK and learn from its sustainability practices, bringing those lessons home to inspire others.
