As part of my upcoming exchange program at the University of Glasgow in September 2026, I want my stay to reflect a commitment to environmental sustainability and respect for the local community.
First and foremost, I wish to discover the rich cultural heritage of Scotland while exploring its wild landscapes responsibly. To minimize my carbon footprint from the moment I arrive, I will prioritize public transportation. I plan to take the Eurostar from Paris to London, then a train from London to Glasgow. In addition to being eco-friendly, this journey will allow me to appreciate the scenery the United Kingdom has to offer.
While there, hiking will be central to my experience. I commit to following the principles of Leave No Trace. To this end, I will ensure that I leave no trace behind, stay on marked trails to avoid erosion of fragile soils, and do not disturb local wildlife.
I particularly want to visit the Isle of Skye, famous for its exceptional landscapes but also a victim of overtourism that affects local residents. To minimize my impact, I have chosen to go there during the off-season (November/December). This approach will not only help to preserve the island’s sensitive ecosystems by avoiding overcrowding on the trails, but also support the local economy at a time of year when tourist activity is at its lowest.
I view this exchange as an opportunity to demonstrate that it is possible to travel, learn, and relish, while being mindful of our impact on the planet.
