Studying abroad is more than an opportunity to experience a new culture—it is a chance to become a more responsible global citizen. As I prepare for my exchange at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, I want my journey to reflect not only academic growth but also my commitment to sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
International travel inevitably has an environmental impact, and I believe the responsibility lies in reducing that impact wherever possible.
Once in Singapore, I intend to embrace sustainable living by relying on its efficient public transport system instead of private vehicles, carrying a reusable water bottle and shopping bag, reducing single-use plastics, and making thoughtful purchasing decisions by buying only what I genuinely need. These may seem like small actions, but collectively they contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle and demonstrate that everyday choices matter.
As a Computer Science student, I also recognise that sustainability extends beyond environmental practices. Technology has the power to solve global challenges, and my exchange will expose me to new perspectives on smart cities, digital innovation, and sustainable technologies. I hope to bring these ideas back to my home university and future career, encouraging others to think about how technology can support environmental and social progress.
Equally important is sharing these experiences. I plan to document my exchange journey, highlighting practical ways students can travel more responsibly without compromising the richness of the experience. By encouraging sustainable habits among my peers, I hope to create a positive ripple effect that extends beyond my own exchange.
The BUTEX Scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of studying abroad but also empower me to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am committed to ensuring that my exchange leaves a positive impact—not just on my education, but on the communities I engage with and the environment we all share.
By travelling with purpose and living responsibly, I hope to demonstrate that international mobility and sustainability can go hand in hand.
