Deconstructing the Cloud: Rewriting the Code for Sustainable Development

A single cumulus cloud typically holds about 1.1 million pounds of water. This water will eventually come down in the form of rain, before reuniting with the rest of the water cycle as it becomes runoff or groundwater. Modern technology, however, has fundamentally disrupted this cycle: “the cloud”, in the form of a single data center, can consume up to five million gallons of water in a day.

This cloud, made of code rather than condensation, took shape in my own life following the sale of one of my university’s campuses to Amazon Data Services. It’s weightless and intangible in the digital world, but its physical infrastructure – the servers, the heat, the fans that run endlessly into the night – exerts a staggering environmental toll through air and noise pollution, water depletion, and intense energy consumption. The abstract data of ecological degradation I had previously viewed from afar suddenly materialized as a dark cloud of realization: the advancement of society should not depend upon the destruction of the environment. It is imperative that sustainability is prioritized at the core of all technological development.

To rewrite the code of sustainable development, shifts in the macro data must begin with micro-level action. During my upcoming semester at the University of Edinburgh, I intend to follow UN SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by actively conserving the very resources being depleted by the data centers expanding near my home campus. To minimize my carbon emissions and pollution, I will rely exclusively on public transit such as Edinburgh’s robust Lothian Bus and tram network for daily commutes, while utilizing the UK’s railway systems such as the LNER or ScotRail for broader exploration. To curb my water and energy consumption, I will prioritize circular economy practices by shopping at secondhand and vintage stores like Armstrongs rather than fast fashion brands, supporting zero-waste grocers like New Leaf Co-Op, and strictly avoiding single-use plastics. Furthermore, guided by UN SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure in my own studies as a data science student, I will highlight the hidden environmental costs of data processing to my peers by fostering conversations about the importance of sustainable development in technology as well as through volunteering or donating to local organizations focused on protecting the environment.

While data centers may obscure the environmental costs of “the cloud”, I refuse to let my environmental footprint as I travel and study abroad remain invisible. By actively tracking my emissions throughout the semester with Greentripper’s carbon footprint calculator, which I chose for its ability to track detailed daily metrics such as public transit and even meal emissions, I will establish a strict personal “carbon budget” to identify areas for continuous improvement. This data-driven accountability ensures that my time in Edinburgh will be as intentional, eco-friendly, and sustainable as possible.
