We only have one Earth, so protecting it is a responsibility we all share. Travelling allows us to experience new cultures and perspectives, but it also important to be mindful of our environmental impact. As I prepare to study abroad in Canada for a semester my first time travelling internationally, I see this as an opportunity to put my values into practice by making informed, conscious and sustainable choices throughout my journey.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reiterate to us that creating a better future requires collective action. While sustainability is often associated with reducing carbon emissions, it also includes Quality Education (Goal 4), Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12), Climate Action (Goal 13), and Partnerships for the Goals (Goal 17). My exchange gives me the opportunity to contribute to these goals in meaningful ways, both personally and academically.
As a UX Design student, sustainability is a fundamental part of my education. Responsible design means considering not only the needs of users but also the wider social and environmental impact of the decisions we make and being aware of how these systems affect each other. Studying the Canadian equivalent of my course will allow me to explore how another country approaches sustainable and inclusive design, broadening my perspective and helping me become a more thoughtful, informed designer.
I have planned practical ways to reduce my environmental footprint during my exchange. I deliberately chose accommodation within walking distance of my host university so I can walk, cycle or use public transport to have less of a carbon footprint (especially walking). For my journey to Canada, I selected a direct flight to reduce emissions compared with connecting flights. I will also minimise waste by carrying a reusable water bottle and shopping bag, avoiding single-use plastics where possible, and supporting local businesses and student causes to contribute positively to the communities I will be part of.
Beyond reducing my own impact, I hope to learn from people with different experiences and perspectives. Studying alongside Canadian students will allow us to exchange ideas about sustainability, responsible innovation and inclusive design. These international connections reflect SDG 17, demonstrating how collaboration across cultures is essential in addressing global challenges such as climate change.
Although international travel inevitably creates emissions, I believe sustainability is not about perfection it is about making intentional choices before, during and after every journey. My semester in Canada is an opportunity to apply the principles I have learned, develop new perspectives on sustainable design, and return to the UK with knowledge that I can share with my university, future employers and wider community. Every small action we take contributes to a larger impact.
