As I sit at the airport waiting for my flight to Hong Kong, I look around and realise that every traveller has a different reason for their journey.
Some are going home. Some are leaving home.
I am travelling to study abroad, and although I am excited about the opportunity ahead, I am also aware of something else, travelling comes with a responsibility.
The plane that will take me across the world leaves a footprint behind. I cannot change that. What I can change is the way I travel once I arrive.
I imagine stepping out into the busy streets of Hong Kong. Instead of relying on taxis, I will learn to use the city’s public transport system. Instead of buying a new bottle of water every day, I will carry one with me. Instead of collecting unnecessary souvenirs, I will focus on collecting experiences, memories, and knowledge.
As a student of HRM and Marketing, I have learned that real change often begins with behaviour. People influence other people. Small actions spread. Habits become culture.
Perhaps one reusable bottle does not save the planet.
Perhaps one bus journey instead of a car ride changes very little.
But sustainability has never been about one perfect action. It is about millions of small choices made every day by ordinary people.
During my exchange, I hope to learn not only from my classes but also from the city itself. Hong Kong is known for its efficient public transport and high-density urban living. I want to understand how communities, businesses, and individuals work together to create a more sustainable future.
These experiences connect directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Responsible Consumption and Production and Climate Action. For me, these goals are not just words on a website. They are reminders that every choice matters.
When I eventually return home, I will bring back more than academic knowledge. I will bring new perspectives, new habits, and a greater understanding of how sustainability can be part of everyday life.
My journey to Hong Kong begins with a flight.
But the most important part of the journey is learning how to leave a positive impact wherever I go.
