An Exchange Student’s Perspective: Observing Sustainable Systems in Bergen

As an incoming law student moving from the intense environment of London to Bergen, I see this exchange as a chance to experience a completely different way of living. I’m honest about the fact that I am not a climate expert. In fact, like many students, I’m still figuring out how to balance my daily habits with a more conscious approach to the environment.

I’m travelling from London to Bergen by flight because it’s the most practical way for me to get there. However, once I land in Norway, I want to use my time in Bergen to learn. I’ve heard so much about how smoothly systems work in Norway, from public transport to waste management, and I’m genuinely curious to see how these systems influence the daily decisions of the people living there.

I chose Bergen because I want to see a different model of living. I want to adapt to the local environment there. For example, I’ve already looked into the light rail (Bybanen) as my primary way to get around because I know it’s the standard way to commute in Bergen. I’m also planning to explore how local students handle daily needs, like food consumption and waste reduction. I am an avid user of apps like ‘’Too Good To Go’’ in London to save on food costs, and I want to see if I can adopt similar habits in Norway to support my budget while also cutting down on waste.

Perhaps the simplest change I’m making is committing to a reusable water bottle. It’s a small thing, but it’s a direct response to how much plastic I see wasted in big cities.

I am nit applying for this scholarship to position myself as a sustainability expert. I am applying because I am a student eager to learn. My goal is to return to SOAS with a fresh perspective by observing and sharing the practical, everyday lessons on responsibility and efficiency that I encounter in Norway. Bergen offers a model of efficiency and responsibility that I want to understand better. This scholarship would allow me to focus on my studies and my transition, rather than just worrying about the costs of moving. I am ready to embrace this change and see how a different environment can reshape my own habits.
