When I received the opportunity to study at the University of Bristol, I was filled with excitement about the experiences that awaited me: studying in a new academic environment, meeting people from different cultures, and exploring a society different from my own. However, as I prepared for this journey from Korea to the United Kingdom, I also began to think about another aspect of international travel: its impact on the environment.
Travel allows people to exchange knowledge, cultures, and ideas across borders. As an economics student, I have learned that individual decisions can create broader social consequences, especially when considering issues such as externalities and sustainable development. Although international travel inevitably produces environmental costs, I believe that these costs should encourage us to make more responsible choices rather than prevent us from connecting with the world.
During my exchange semester in Bristol, I hope to make sustainability a part of my everyday lifestyle. For my daily activities, I plan to walk, cycle, and use public transportation whenever possible instead of relying on private vehicles. Since Bristol is known for its efforts to promote sustainable transport and environmentally conscious communities, I hope to learn from the city’s approach and actively participate in a more sustainable way of living.
My commitment to sustainability will also extend beyond the UK. As an exchange student in Europe, I hope to explore different countries and experience their cultures, histories, and societies. However, I want these journeys to be responsible ones. Whenever possible, I plan to choose lower-carbon transportation methods such as trains and buses instead of frequent short-distance flights. I will also try to travel more thoughtfully by staying longer in fewer destinations, supporting local businesses, respecting local communities, and avoiding unnecessary consumption during my travels.
In my daily life, I will continue to practice responsible consumption by reducing single-use plastics, carrying a reusable water bottle and cup, recycling properly according to local guidelines, and minimizing food waste. I also plan to purchase second-hand items when necessary and donate or reuse belongings before returning to Korea. These small decisions reflect my belief that sustainability is created through consistent actions rather than occasional efforts.
These practices are closely connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate Action). Through my exchange experience, I hope not only to reduce my own environmental impact but also to understand how different societies approach sustainability.
Ultimately, I see my exchange semester as more than an academic opportunity. It is a chance to become a more responsible global citizen. As a future economist, I want to continue exploring how economic development can coexist with environmental responsibility. By making sustainable choices throughout my journey, I hope to show that travelling across borders and protecting our planet can move forward together.
