Studying abroad in New York City as a Fashion Communication student offers an invaluable opportunity to engage with one of the world’s leading fashion and cultural hubs. However, I am also aware that both international travel and the fashion industry have significant environmental impacts. For this reason, I am committed to making my study abroad experience as sustainable as possible by aligning my actions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/retail/our-insights/at-a-crossroads-new-yorks-status-as-a-global-fashion-capital
The SDGs most relevant to my placement are SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. These goals are especially important in the context of New York City, a global fashion capital that also faces challenges such as high consumption rates, textile waste, and carbon emissions from transport and industry. As a Fashion Communication student, I am particularly aware of the role fashion plays in overconsumption. During my placement, I plan to adopt more conscious consumption habits by buying second-hand or vintage clothing, re-wearing outfits creatively, and supporting sustainable and independent designers rather than fast fashion brands. This directly supports SDG 12 by encouraging responsible production and consumption patterns within the fashion industry. https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/articles/united-nations-sustainable-development-goals
I will also focus on reducing everyday waste by using reusable items such as water bottles, coffee cups, and tote bags, as well as properly recycling and minimising single-use plastics. Small behavioural changes like these are essential in a fast-paced urban environment like New York City, where consumption levels are high.
Beyond personal habits, I also hope to use my studies in Fashion Communication to promote sustainability through creative work. Fashion media has a powerful influence on consumer behaviour, and I aim to create work that raises awareness of ethical fashion, highlights environmental issues in the industry, and encourages more responsible consumption. This links closely to SDG 4 and SDG 10, as education and awareness are key to driving long-term behavioural change and reducing inequalities within global fashion systems.
Overall, my time in New York City will not only develop my academic and creative skills but also strengthen my commitment to sustainability. By actively aligning my choices with the United Nations SDGs, I aim to minimise my environmental impact and contribute positively to both the local community and the wider global conversation around sustainable fashion and travel.
