It’s a Green World After All! Living, Working and Studying Sustainably Abroad.

I have been fortunate to travel to the United States before, and although I was younger can vividly remember the feeling that the world was much larger than I had previously imagined. I enjoyed the differences in culture, as it is what makes us unique, our accents, local turns-of-phrase and customs. Having the opportunity to experience this made me realise that there is more in the world than the small city and country that I live in. This sparked an interest within me to travel and explore new places, to engage in new culture and meet new people.

This summer that dream is coming true!

For a year I will be working at Walt Disney World partnered with Central Michigan University to experience educational and workplace cultures within the United States. I currently live in Wales, one of the most progressive sustainable counties in the world. For example, Wales ranks 2nd of 48 countries for recycling (Eunomia, 2024). This practice is reflected within my university studies with many of my modules focusing on sustainability within business (Cardiff Metropolitan University, no date). It will be interesting to see and discuss with others, how other countries tackle issues like climate change, and what I can implement into my everyday lifestyle. The United Kingdom is ranked 9th of the United Nations Countries for their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, whereas the United States ranks 46th (Sustainable Development Report, 2024). This offers an opportunity to see how each country differs, along with other countries that my co-workers and roommates live.

Furthermore, Walt Disney World encourage a sustainable impact, utilising solar energy and reduce waste and encouraging recycling in the parks (Disney In Florida, no date). Additionally, the educational element of sustainability at Walt Disney World is important with many conservational efforts and educational resources available in the parks. This opportunity allows me to learn sustainable practices used across the globe whilst living in shared accommodation with many other international students like me.

When travelling to the United States travelling as sustainable as possible is important, in order to combat the carbon footprint of the flight I am flying with the least carbon emissions possible, a direct flight with an organisation that mitigate emissions per passenger (Norse Airways, no date). Furthermore, sustainable travel is something that I will be conscious of whilst living in the US, for example utilising the public transport to my workplace, and walking to accessible shops to me rather than opting for the use of transportation. As this is a topic I am passionate about I am truly excited to discuss with others their thoughts on sustainability, and potentially the difference in opting for more sustainable travel in different parts of the world.
