Travelling sustainably is important for protecting the environments and communities we explore. Every small decision amplifies when thousands of travelers make them, turning individual habits into significant collective change. To ensure my international placement remains as sustainable as possible, I focus on mindful, daily choices that directly reduce my ecological footprint.
I tried to reduce single-use plastic consumption, which directly supports UNSDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Whenever I go grocery shopping during my placement, I completely avoid purchasing plastic bags by bringing my own reusable tote bags. This simple habit keeps unnecessary plastic out of local waste streams and oceans. Furthermore, I have adopted a regular recycling routine in my accommodation, ensuring that recyclable packaging is properly sorted.
Additionally, I manage my food consumption with high intentionality to combat resource waste. Instead of constantly relying on takeout or dining out, which often generates excessive packaging waste, I usually cook my meals at home. I plan my meals and only buy specific ingredients I need for the week ensuring that I do not waste any food, minimizing organic waste and reducing the overall environmental footprint associated with food production and disposal.
By prioritizing waste reduction, intentional buying, and responsible daily habits, I aim to ensure my stay leaves a positive, low-impact footprint on my host community, contributing directly to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
