The life changing perspective travel and sustainability brings.

Travel has always inspired something deep within me. It is a chance to grow to learn and connect. But as I journey beyond borders, I carry with me not just my suitcase but my responsibility to tread lightly on this. My faith teaches me that we are Khalifa/ Stewards of the Earth, and it is from this belief that my commitment to sustainable travel stems.
In the summer of 2024, I had the honour of volunteering in Fiji with Think Pacific, a social enterprise focused on sustainable development and meeting the In sustainable development initiatives. As a youth empowerment volunteer at the time, living and working within a Fijian village, taught me that sustainability isn’t just about solar panels or reusable bags, it’s about community, respect for nature and using resources within your surroundings mindfully. Whether it was preserving water, reducing plastic, or embracing local food and customs, I learned to live simply, gratefully and with purpose. as I prepare for my next international experience in South Korea with Hanyang university I carry those lessons forward, I’ve chosen student dormitories and plan to use souls extensive public transport system with Seoul’s sustainable climate card, instead of relying on taxis. I intend to support local businesses and minimise single-use plastic by carrying reusable items, habits I’ve already implemented at home (at home, my mum has always taught me to reuse bags whenever we go shopping)

Every action that I take may be small, but it is intentional, and I believe every small action can go a long way. However, these small yet intentional actions align with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production), Goal 13 (climate action) and Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities). To me, sustainability is a principle that shapes the way I live, travel and interact with the world.
As I continue on this next chapter of my travels, Insh’Allah, I hope to inspire others to reflect on how their footsteps leave a mark, a reminder that we are stewards of the Earth, interested in protecting it and that every choice we make can either nurture the world or contribute to its harm.
