I am a Civil Engineering student at the University of Southampton preparing to undertake a year abroad at the University of Bologna. Sustainability is one of the main influences on my studies and future career, and I see this placement as an opportunity to develop academically while making my year abroad as sustainable as possible.
One of the reasons I chose the University of Bologna is its strong focus on sustainable engineering. I am particularly looking forward to studying modules in climate change adaptation, sustainable infrastructure and resilient engineering, which complement my studies at Southampton. In addition, Bologna is a walkable, well-connected city with an excellent public transport network, making it an ideal place to experience sustainable living alongside sustainable engineering.
Throughout my degree, I have actively looked for opportunities to develop my understanding of sustainability. During my second-year design project, I led the sustainability aspects of a five-person engineering team, researching embodied carbon, sustainable material choices and the environmental impact of infrastructure development. In my first year, I was nominated as project lead for a bridge design and construction project that achieved top marks within the year group. As the only female in the team, the experience strengthened my confidence as a leader and reinforced my belief that different perspectives create better engineering solutions.
My interest in sustainability extends beyond university. I successfully secured work experience with Scott White and Hookins, a civil engineering consultancy where I continue to work during university holidays. This has shown me how sustainability influences engineering practice, from design decisions to environmental assessments and long-term infrastructure resilience.
During my placement, I intend to make conscious choices that reduce my environmental impact. I have chosen accommodation within walking distance of the university so that I can walk to most of my classes and minimise my reliance on private transport. For longer journeys, I plan to use Bologna’s public transport network and Italy’s rail system wherever practical. I also reduce waste by buying clothes second-hand through charity shops and Vinted, using reusable products and avoiding single-use plastics where possible. These small everyday decisions support the principles behind the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Sustainability is also personal to me. Members of my family have historical links to eastern Ukraine, and some have lost their lives or been displaced by the ongoing conflict. Seeing the impact that damaged infrastructure has on communities has reinforced my belief that civil engineering is about much more than constructing buildings and roads. It is about creating safe, resilient places where people can rebuild their lives. Through my placement at the University of Bologna, I hope to develop the knowledge, international perspective and practical skills needed to contribute to more sustainable infrastructure in the future, both in the UK and, one day, in the rebuilding of communities affected by conflict in Ukraine.
