Travelling has always been something that I have loved since I was a kid, and now getting the opportunity to travel to study a year abroad in Spain feels like a dream come true. Truthfully speaking when I was younger, I have never really paid much attention to the impact travelling has in the environment. But the more I grew up the more I realised what the consequences are of travelling. When I found out I got accepted to my year abroad I realised this is an opportunity for me to implement more sustainable approaches in my journey that can help prevent further damage to the environment.
Travelling brings so many unique experiences that cannot be learnt in a classroom such as truly learning about new cultures, making new friendships, connections and growing. A year abroad is a life changing experience, and I want to ensure that I plan my trip thinking of sustainable approaches that I can take.
Some changes that I am already prepared to make are:
• Using public transport, walking, and cycling to reduce carbon emission rather than booking taxis and uber. Not only is it a sustainable approach but it will also allow me to truly experience the beauty of Valencia.
• As well as that I am planning on using reusable items as much as possible, such using a reusable water bottle, reusable clothing bags to pack my items so that I can reduce plastic waste. The truth is that when travelling it is so easy to reach for the most convenient things and that seems easier, when I travelled for my summer holidays last year I used to just buy plastic water bottles because they were more convenient in the moment however now I realised that not only is it a waste of money but also damaging for the environment.
• I am also planning on booking direct flights for my destination in Valencia so that I can reduce carbon emissions where possible. I will also support small local businesses in the city.
These are small changes that I hope make a different in the environment. They also align with 3 specific SDG’s such as:
• Goal 11 Sustainable cities and communities
• Goal 12 Responsible consumptions and Productions
• Goal 13 Climate Action
They are small steps, but they help to make a difference which is what I value the most.
I am also learning more about the Valencian traditions and customs as well as practicing my Spanish before I go as I believe that respecting the local’s community is a form of sustainability.
Going abroad to me is a big privilege and with that there is also a form of responsibility to carry, small steps can make big changes if we all do it.
Through my trip I want to share my experiences on what I have learned on my year abroad through my social media channels like Tik Tok to show that travelling can be mindful and meaningful.
