12 :48 PM.
The train shudders along the tracks.
My dish vibrates on the tablet.
Blue eyes marvel at my meal prep
Saying “your plate looks terrific ….
I close my notebook and put down my pen. I turn to face my spy. A girl boarded in at Morlaix asks
“How did you make that, it smells amazing ? “. I reply by saying that it wasn’t me, I asked a restaurant to pack it in my own dish. Pointing at her stale sandwich, she mutters she can’t afford much more than this.
“You’d be surprised ! Check this out, it’s an anti-waste app called Karma. You can find meals at lower prices.”
She looks over my shoulder to check my phone “And this one ?” She asks, pointing to a pink and orange icon named Olio.
“ It’s an app where you can borrow and lend or give away tools or food. I will test it out during my installation. ”
“Like local sharing ?”
“Exactly”
“Well then, let’s toast to eco-friendly practices !”The metal of our gourds clinks merrily.
6 :00 am –
Here between Cherbourg and Portsmouth
Finally, daybreak starts to rise
Peaceful awakening of the English Channel.
The soft light dances on the waves
Birds fly low along the swell
I drift
With them
The ship
The sea
The birds
Hypnotizing me
I breathe
The ship horn’s sound bursts through the air
Jolting me out of my own thoughts
A light wind cools my burning cheeks.
My tears fall down to meet the waves
I never left my home behind,
But something right awaits for me
Portsmouth’s shore, a place for me
To study life beneath the waves
Forever faithful to the sea
Too bright for me, I turn away and walk alone across the deck.
More to the left, blue fishing boats try to blend, invisible to my eyes
But the movement of their nets are betraying them.
I see life escaping from the dark and heavy mass inside
I raise my eyebrows and sigh while unlocking my phone. After a glance at the AWorld widget, an app promoted by the UN that tracks our environmental footprint, I open my messages. Quickly, I type “Hey Camille, remember the article we read on OCEANA’s website about the protection of the world’s ocean ? Well… I’m currently on the ferry and I just saw several fishing boats… knowing that they are bulldozing marine protected areas makes me sick. Jonathan said Sea Life Brighton is lining up a beach clean- up on October 3rd. You in ?”
7 : 00 am – Portsmouth.
A quiet step, a world begins
My heart belongs unto the waves
