Travel with Purpose: Embracing Sustainable Journeys Abroad

Travel is far more than a journey to explore new landscapes and cultures; it is a profound opportunity to connect with the world responsibly, and sustainability lies at the heart of meaningful international travel. As I pursue my overseas internship aligned with my undergraduate studies, I firmly believe that sustainable travel is not just a choice but a responsibility to protect our planet, echoing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—especially Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

Sustainable travel redefines how we experience the world, urging us to minimize our ecological footprint while fostering respect for local environments and communities. It rejects reckless tourism that depletes natural resources and disrupts ecosystems, instead advocating for mindful, low-impact exploration that preserves destinations for future generations. For my international internship placement, I have prioritized eco-friendly practices at every step to ensure my journey supports a cleaner, greener planet.

To reduce carbon emissions, I opted for public transportation—trains and buses—over short-haul flights and private cars during my commute and local travels, cutting down my carbon footprint significantly. I carry a reusable water bottle, cloth shopping bags and eco-friendly toiletries to eliminate single-use plastic waste, refusing plastic items in daily life and properly sorting waste for recycling. Additionally, I choose locally owned accommodation and small businesses, supporting the local economy while reducing the environmental impact of large corporate chains.

I also actively engage in community-focused green initiatives, such as local beach clean-ups and tree-planting activities, to directly contribute to environmental protection. I share sustainable travel tips with peers, encouraging them to adopt low-waste, low-carbon travel habits, spreading awareness of eco-friendly practices beyond my own actions.

Every small sustainable choice accumulates into meaningful change. By aligning my international internship with sustainable travel principles and the UN SDGs, I strive to make my overseas experience not only personally enriching but also environmentally responsible, proving that travel and environmental protection can coexist harmoniously. This commitment to sustainability will continue to guide my future global journeys, as I aim to be a conscientious global citizen dedicated to a healthier planet.
