Leaving a Lighter Footprint Abroad

Travel gives people the opportunity to learn about different cultures, gain new experiences, and build international connections. However, travelling also has an environmental impact, especially through air travel, waste production, and overconsumption. Because of this, I believe it is important to travel responsibly and make sustainable choices whenever possible.

During my international placement, I have tried and will continue to reduce my environmental impact in simple but meaningful ways. For example, I plan to use public transport, walk, or cycle instead of relying heavily on taxis or private cars. These choices not only reduce carbon emissions but also help me experience local life more closely.

I am also committed to reducing waste by carrying reusable items such as a water bottle, shopping bag, and food containers. Instead of buying unnecessary plastic products, I will try to make environmentally friendly choices in my daily routine. In accommodation and shared spaces, I will be careful about saving electricity and water by turning off lights, limiting energy use, and avoiding waste.

In addition, I believe sustainable travel also means supporting local communities. I hope to buy from local businesses, respect local culture, and contribute positively to the places I visit. This supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

Although one person cannot solve environmental problems alone, small actions taken consistently can still make a difference. Through my international placement, I want to show that it is possible to enjoy global opportunities while also being responsible towards the environment and future generations.
