A Sustainable Step Across Oceans

Travelling is a gift! It offers us the chance to connect with new cultures, communities, and landscapes, enriching our understanding of the world. But with that gift comes responsibility. Today, sustainable travel is no longer optional; it is a necessity. As I prepare for my international placement with Think Pacific, I carry with me excitement, curiosity, and a deep commitment to ensuring my journey contributes positively to the people and places I encounter. For me, eco-conscious travel starts with mindful decisions. At home and abroad, I prioritise low-impact transport, whether it’s walking through my university city, using carbon-conscious rail and coach travel across the UK, or opting for public transport when abroad. These choices reflect my belief that sustainability begins with our daily habits. While I recognise that carbon offsets are only one part of the solution, I focus on reducing consumption first, ensuring that my impact is thoughtful and minimal wherever I go.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), my Think Pacific placement presents a unique opportunity to support environmental and community resilience in Fiji. By working alongside local communities and environmental organisations, I will contribute to initiatives that promote responsible resource use and safeguard local ecosystems. I also hope to support ethical businesses in improving community infrastructure, helping to make it safer, inclusive, and environmentally sound. This hands-on engagement fosters meaningful, cross-cultural collaboration, true to the foundation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

One of my proudest achievements so far has been participating in a mentorship programme with Catalyse Change, where I was mentored by a professional working in sustainable industries. This experience opened my eyes to the breadth of green career opportunities and deepened my awareness of how sustainability can be practically integrated into future work. In Western contexts, I would like to focus on energy efficiency and conscious consumption, as this has a significant global impact.
During my placement, I plan to document my journey through a sustainability blog. This platform will allow me to share eco-friendly travel tips and highlight the efforts of local communities working towards sustainable development. I want to amplify the voices of the Fijian people and show how travel can be used not as a means of escape, but as a powerful tool for connection, learning, and stewardship.

Sustainable travel is not about sacrifice, it’s about value. When we slow down and approach our journeys with respect, we gain far more than just memories. We become ambassadors for the planet, helping to protect the very places that welcome us.
The BUTEX scholarship is more than financial support; it’s a chance to lead by example. With your support, I can ensure my international placement is academically fulfilling, socially impactful, and environmentally conscious, a journey that truly honours both people and planet.
