Sustainable Steps Beyond Borders

As a BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science student at Glasgow Caledonian University, I’ve always been excited by how technology can solve real-world problems. So when I was accepted to the ICT Summer School at Metropolia University’s Myyrmäki campus in Finland, I saw it as more than just an academic trip. It’s a chance to grow personally while staying true to the values I care about, especially sustainability.

Over the ICT Summer programme, I’ll be studying Introduction to Smart Environments and Introduction to Machine Learning; two subjects that directly relate to improving how we live and interact with the world. These technologies can help optimise energy use, reduce waste, and even support climate goals. Learning about them in a forward-thinking country like Finland, known for its environmental leadership, makes this opportunity even more meaningful.

Personally, sustainability isn’t just something I study. It’s a way of life. I’ve always felt a deep connection to nature; whether it’s hiking through forest trails, walking in the Scottish Highlands, or just spending time among trees and mountains. These moments remind me why protecting the planet matters.

That’s why I’m approaching this trip with care and intention. I’ve chosen the lowest-emission flight option available and used a carbon offset programme that supports reforestation. While in Finland, I plan to use only public transport, trams, trains, and buses, since the Helsinki and Myyrmäki regions have excellent eco-friendly infrastructure. I’ll also rent a bike where possible to reduce emissions even further.

In my daily life, I try to make small, sustainable choices that add up. I carry a reusable water bottle and bag, and avoid single-use plastics. I also use Ecosia, the eco-friendly search engine that plants trees with ad revenue; something simple, but impactful. These choices, though personal, reflect my commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

At Metropolia, I hope to join any sustainability initiatives on campus and learn how local students incorporate green thinking into their studies and everyday lives.

As a tech student who loves the outdoors, I see sustainability as the bridge between innovation and nature. Travel doesn’t have to be wasteful. With planning, awareness, and the right mindset, it can become part of the solution. I want my international placement to reflect that and to prove that meaningful, eco-conscious experiences are possible, and necessary, in today’s world.
