Dear Diary,
My bedroom is a sea of cardboard boxes as I’m resisting the urge to overpack — no sense wasting carbon shipping things I don’t need. Instead, I’ve found an online second-hand market in Roskilde where I can pick up pre-loved furniture once I arrive which is better for my budget and the planet. Anything I don’t take, I’ll donate locally. It feels good to give things a new life before starting my own new chapter.

Dear Diary,
The clouds part as the plane descends, revealing the patchwork of green and grey that will be my home for the next year. I grip my reusable bottle tighter. I’ve promised myself I’ll tread lightly here, not just on the environment but in how I listen and live.

Dear Diary,
I’ve finally settled in. As an Environmental Science student, I’ve spent years analysing global problems, but studying sustainability in a London lecture hall and living it abroad are two different things. The world is deeply connected and so are its crises and solutions. Every choice I make here reminds me that responsible consumption and production isn’t just theory, it’s everyday action. Still, my mind keeps wandering back to the flight that brought me here. It was such a big carbon cost just for one student’s dream. It makes me even more determined to choose lower-impact ways of getting around now that I’m here. Thankfully, Denmark makes this easy since Roskilde’s public transport and bike paths help me shrink my travel footprint every day.

Dear Diary,
It’s my first real winter night in Roskilde. I’ve discovered hygge here isn’t just candles and cosy blankets (though I love those too). It’s community and care — sharing a meal with housemates, swapping clothes at a student byttemarked, and baking bread with local ingredients from a recipe I found using Ecosia. Living more sustainably doesn’t feel like sacrifice; it feels like connection. Climate action needs that sense of togetherness.

Dear Diary,
Back home I talked about sustainability in lectures. Here, I’m living it — and learning real progress happens when people work together. Community is sustainability too. Even cycling is different here! Roskilde’s bike-friendly streets make it feel natural to ride everywhere with friends. It’s not just about cutting carbon; it’s about freedom and fresh air together. This kind of sustainable infrastructure makes responsible choices easy. I guess this is my way of balancing the big carbon footprint of flying here as Denmark’s sustainable transport network reminds me that every mile we don’t drive (or fly) counts.

Dear Diary,
My reusable bottle’s a bit scratched now and my mindset even more so. I know I’ll return to London changed, not just by what I did but by what I learned and shared. One passport, one planet… and so many ways to care for it together.
