Global travel fuels cross-cultural connection and academic growth, yet it also brings unavoidable carbon emissions and environmental pressure. True international mobility should never come at the cost of the planet. As I prepare for a full-year exchange at the University of Hong Kong, I aim to integrate low-carbon, responsible travel into every part of my overseas study, aligning closely with UN SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) to deliver practical, eco-friendly actions.
I have long practiced sustainable travel habits in daily life and will scale them up during my HKU placement. To cut travel carbon footprints, I will fully abandon private transportation and rely entirely on Hong Kong’s mature public transit system, including MTR, trams and ferries—low-emission urban transport that supports the city’s green development goals. I will also adopt a zero-waste daily routine: bringing reusable water bottles, tote bags and tableware to eliminate single-use plastics, a common source of urban environmental waste.
Beyond personal habits, I plan to engage with local sustainable communities during my exchange. Hong Kong promotes urban green living and trail conservation widely. I will participate in campus and community eco-cleanup activities to maintain local ecological cleanliness. Academically, I will combine my finance studies with HKU’s sustainability courses, exploring how green finance supports low-carbon urban development, turning academic learning into actionable environmental awareness.
Furthermore, I will share my sustainable travel experience on student platforms, connecting UK and Hong Kong student communities to advocate eco-friendly exchange norms. Many overseas students overlook small daily carbon outputs; my sharing will inspire peers to prioritize green mobility and low-waste lifestyles during international placements.
For me, sustainable travel is not a temporary practice but a lifelong responsibility. My full-year HKU exchange will be a journey of growth and environmental commitment. By adhering to green daily habits, engaging local sustainability initiatives and spreading eco-friendly concepts, I will ensure my overseas study leaves cultural and academic gains, rather than environmental burdens, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable global mobility.
