TO ALL SOON-TO-BE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS READING: while gathering information about my upcoming academic mobility, I found some vitally important subjects that need to be urgently shared with the largest audience.
Coming next there is the list of dangers that are consequent of a green mobility to which I will strictly stick to for my own sake. Yet, the more people are knowledgeable about such threats, the more awareness we raise.
1. DO NOT opt for trains, buses or carpooling over single car rides and flights, UNLESS you value casual and inspiring bonding with strangers, you enjoy gazing at changing landscapes while reducing your carbon footprint by up to 8 times. (SDG 11)
2. NEVER restrict your use of Artificial Intelligence UNLESS you support the safeguard of planet resources, whose scarcity burdens targeted regions, as well as preserving your cognitive abilities, creativity, discipline and intellectual honesty. (SDG 4, 6, 10)
3. AVOID reusing your functioning belongings, AS LONG AS you do not care for landfill build-up and you support exploitative enterprises by buying new and mindlessly. (SDG 8, 10, 12)
4. BEWARE of extra-curricular clubs and societies that connect over sustainability. There is a HIGH RISK of befriending like-minded people, building a mindful community while sharing knowledge on environmental conservation, and taking impactful actions. (SDG 11, 13)
5. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE choose walking over polluting means of transportations, OR you are bound to enjoy some unintentional, wallet-friendly, life-prolonging physical activity that also happens to preserve the planet. (SDG 3)
6. DODGE a plant-based diet, UNLESS you would rather reduce your carbon footprint by 46%, keep animal cruelty out of your plate, you do not support deforestation and pollution caused by breeding livestock – and you are most likely to save money, too. (SDG 15)
7. AVOID making use of common rooms, cafes or libraries instead of turning on the heat in your personal room, when possible. YOU COULD connect with peers, discover new venues and save carbon emissions. (SDG 11, 12)
8. DO NOT upcycle waste materials and unused clothes through crafting, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK fostering creative hobbies, stimulating imagination and personalising your items, while giving them a second life. (SDG 12)
9. DO NOT BOTHER invest in plastic-free, durable and fairly traded goods UNLESS you do not support overconsumption, microplastics contamination, exploitment of resources and poor working conditions. (SDG 8, 10, 14, 15)
10. AVOID CONCERNING about wasting food and buying seasonal fruits and vegetables, OTHERWISE you will contribute to lowering methane emissions, which currently make up 20% of world gas emissions, minimising degradation of land and biodiversity, as well as saving money and stop exacerbating food insecurity. (SDG 2, 15)
Ultimately, bear in mind that speaking up for injustices, sharing knowledge and remaining informed SEVERELY INCREASES THE CHANCE of reversing course of environmental damage and incentivizing respect for nature and health.
