Next year, I will spend my third year of Political Science at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. This is an important opportunity for me to study in another country, discover a new culture and improve my academic and personal skills. For me, travelling is not only about discovering new places but also about being responsible and protecting the environment.
Sustainability is already part of my daily life. During my two years living and studying in Strasbourg, France, I have tried to reduce my impact on the environment. I usually walk to go everywhere when it is possible. When I need to go faster or further, I use my bicycle instead of taking more polluting transport.
I also pay attention to what I consume. To reduce waste and plastic packaging, I often buy basic food like pasta, rice, and cereals in bulk, and I store them in reusable glass jars. I also bought a SodaStream because I like sparkling water. This helps me avoid buying many plastic bottles, which is better for the environment. Even if these actions seem small, I believe they can make a real difference when done every day.
I have also decided not to return to France during my academic year in Leicester, except in case of emergency. This is an important personal choice for me. I have been trying for a long time to reduce my carbon footprint and I think that avoiding unnecessary flights is one of the best ways to do it. Instead of travelling back and forth, I want to fully focus on my experience in the UK and take part in university life.
During my year abroad, I will continue to live in a sustainable way. I will walk, cycle or use public transport whenever possible. I will also try to reduce waste and support local shops and businesses. These actions are connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially responsible consumption, sustainable cities and climate action.
I believe that students can help protect the environment through their daily choices. My year at the University of Leicester will be a chance for me to learn, grow, and continue my commitment to sustainability while living an international experience.
