Growing up, public transport wasn’t just a way to get around; it was an adventure. From darting off the bus for sweets to sprinting back to catch it, my daily commute from Year 7 to Year 13 was an unintentional but effective exercise routine. This ingrained appreciation for efficient, accessible shared transport now underpins my commitment to sustainable travel as I prepare for an international placement.
Travel offers unparalleled growth and cultural exchange, yet its environmental impact can be substantial. The allure of exploration often clashes with the reality of carbon emissions and resource depletion. For me, sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a personal imperative. My goal is to ensure my international placement is not only enriching but also environmentally responsible, actively contributing to a cleaner planet and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To achieve this, my approach combines practical measures with personal history. Firstly, public transport will be my primary mode of travel. Just as I mastered my local bus network, I’ll immerse myself in the host country’s public transit systems. This directly supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by reducing reliance on private vehicles and fostering efficient urban mobility. My years on buses taught me patience, adaptability, and the joy of observing local life, offering richer experiences than solitary car journeys.
Secondly, I’ll prioritize walking and cycling whenever feasible. This isn’t solely about reducing emissions; it’s about truly experiencing a place, discovering hidden gems, and staying active. My childhood sprints for the bus instilled in me the value of movement, and I’ll carry that energy into exploring my new surroundings on foot or by bike, contributing to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Furthermore, I commit to mindful consumption and waste reduction. This means using reusable water bottles and coffee cups, minimizing single-use plastics, and supporting local, sustainable businesses. This aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and directly contributes to a cleaner environment. I will also choose accommodation providers that prioritize environmental sustainability, such as energy efficiency and waste management.
Finally, I aim to engage with local environmental initiatives. Whether participating in community clean-ups, learning about conservation efforts, or sharing sustainable practices, I believe in being an active participant in the host community’s efforts toward a greener future. This embodies the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) and amplifies my individual impact.
My journey, from a bus-sprinting child to a university student preparing for an international placement, has been shaped by a deep connection to efficient, shared movement. This foundation, combined with a conscious effort to embrace eco-friendly choices, will ensure my time abroad is not only personally transformative but also a genuine contribution to a more sustainable world.
