Studying abroad is something I have been looking forward to because it gives me the chance to experience a new culture, meet new people, and grow both personally and academically. At the same time, I know that traveling has an impact on the environment, so I want to do my part to make my experience as sustainable as possible.
One of the biggest ways I plan to do this is by using public transportation instead of relying on cars whenever I can. I also plan to walk to places that are close by. Not only is it better for the environment, but it is also a great way to explore the city and experience everyday life.
I also want to reduce waste by bringing a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bag with me. These are small changes, but I believe they can make a difference over time. I will also be mindful of my water and electricity usage and recycle whenever possible.
Another way I want to travel responsibly is by supporting local businesses instead of large chains whenever I have the choice. I want to experience the local culture through family-owned restaurants, markets, and shops while helping support the community I will be living in.
These choices connect with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Responsible Consumption and Production, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action. I know I cannot solve environmental issues on my own, but I believe everyone can make small choices that have a positive impact.
I also hope to learn from how my host country approaches sustainability. If I discover new habits or ideas while I am abroad, I want to bring them home and continue using them in my everyday life.
For me, studying abroad is about more than earning credits. It is about learning how to be a responsible global citizen. I want to leave a positive impact on the places I visit by making thoughtful choices, respecting the local community, and doing my best to protect the environment. I believe that even small actions can make a difference, and I hope my experience abroad will encourage me to continue living more sustainably long after I return home.
