Studying abroad at the University of Chichester is an opportunity I value not only for academic and personal growth, but also for the responsibility it gives me to travel more sustainably and intentionally. I believe international travel should be approached with awareness of its environmental impact and a commitment to reducing harm while contributing positively to the communities I visit. Because of this, I intend to align my study abroad experience with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially those focused on climate action, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption.
One of the most meaningful aspects of studying in England for me is the opportunity to experience public transportation systems that are not directly available where I live in the United States. I have set a personal goal to use and learn from these systems as much as possible during my time abroad. I am especially looking forward to using Lime Bikes, buses, trains, the Tube, and the Eurostar. These forms of transportation represent a more sustainable and efficient way of traveling, and I want to make them a central part of my daily life while abroad. Choosing public and shared transportation instead of private rides or cars reduces emissions and supports more environmentally friendly urban living.
In addition to transportation, I plan to be intentional about how I approach everyday sustainability while studying abroad. I intend to reduce waste by using reusable items such as water bottles and shopping bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and following local recycling guidelines carefully. One detail I am especially looking forward to is using water bottles with attached caps, which help prevent caps from being lost and reduce litter that can harm the environment. This small design difference reflects a larger mindset of thoughtful sustainability that I hope to carry forward.
This will also be my first time traveling internationally, which makes this experience especially meaningful. It is an opportunity to learn firsthand how daily choices in a different country can support or harm sustainability efforts. I see this as a chance to build stronger habits and gain a real-world understanding of environmental responsibility in a global context. I also plan to support sustainability through my spending choices by using local businesses and community-based services rather than relying on large global chains. This helps reduce environmental impact from long supply chains while also supporting the local economy and culture. I want my presence as an international student to be respectful, mindful, and beneficial.
Beyond my personal actions, I hope to engage with sustainability initiatives at the University of Chichester. Whether through student groups, campus programs, or community projects, I want to actively contribute to environmental awareness and action while learning from others who share the same goals. Ultimately, I see this experience as an opportunity to grow into a more responsible global citizen. By making intentional choices in transportation, consumption, and daily living, I hope to reduce my environmental impact and bring these sustainable habits back to my community.
