A Passport with Purpose: Learning Globally While Living Sustainably

Travel has the power to broaden perspectives, strengthen cross-cultural understandings, and inspire meaningful change. Even so, these opportunities also come with a responsibility to minimize our environmental impact. Throughout my education in the state of Michigan in the United States, I have learned that climate change is one of the defining challenges of our generation. It has reinforced the importance of considering not only what we gain from our choices, but also what our planet does not need, including but not limited to, more waste, unnecessary emissions, and unsustainable consumption. I believe sustainable travel is about making decisions that protect the places we visit, while also respecting the communities that call them home.
From September through December, I will be studying abroad in London to deepen my understanding of the social and criminal justice systems. As a first-time visitor, I hope to experience the city not only as a student but also as a responsible global citizen. I am excited to learn how London incorporates sustainability through its public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, and protected green spaces. Instead of relying on taxis or rideshare services, I plan to use the Underground, buses, and walking to reduce my environmental footprint while experiencing the city more authentically. Throughout my placement, I will practice responsible consumption by carrying reusable essentials, minimizing single-use plastics, purchasing only what I need, supporting locally owned businesses, and choosing locally sourced food when possible. I believe sustainability is built through consistent daily habits, where small choices create meaningful change. My lifestyle in London aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By embracing sustainable transportation, reducing waste, making environmentally conscious purchasing decisions, and building relationships across cultures, I hope to demonstrate that international education and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
With all of this being said, when I return home, I hope my study abroad experience will continue to have an impact beyond my own personal growth. I intend to share what I learn about sustainable living and travel with my classmates, friends, and family, intending to encourage others to make environmentally responsible choices in their own lives. For me, studying abroad is more than an opportunity to explore a new country, but a chance to become a more thoughtful global citizen. By approaching my first visit to London and Europe with curiosity, respect, and a commitment to sustainability, I hope to contribute to a cleaner, healthier future for the communities I visit for the plant we all share and call home.
