Becoming a more responsible global citizen - Joseph Turley

I’ve always believed that while travel is an amazing opportunity, it comes with responsibilities — especially when it comes to sustainability. With my upcoming international placement, I’ve been thinking carefully about how I can reduce my environmental impact and make thoughtful choices during my time abroad.

In preparation for going to South Korea, I’ve looked into the most sustainable ways to get around. I plan to use public transport as much as possible and have already researched getting a T-money card for subways and buses. I’ll also walk when I can — something I already enjoy doing, especially in new cities. I plan to pack a reusable water bottle, cutlery set, and a tote bag to avoid single-use plastics, and I’ve switched to solid toiletries like shampoo and soap bars after trying them on a previous trip and finding them convenient and waste-free.

These choices might seem small, but they reflect the kind of traveler I want to be — someone mindful of their footprint. They also align with several UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption

Goal 13: Climate Action

Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

I know I still have a lot to learn when it comes to sustainability, but I’m trying to take practical steps that match my values. This placement isn’t just a chance to grow academically and culturally — it’s also an opportunity to become a more responsible global citizen.
