Global knowledge, local footprints: A pragmatic and environmentally conscious approach to higher education in Aberdeen

Embarking on my exchange semester at the University of Aberdeen represents a profound opportunity to gain global knowledge, but it also demands a strong commitment to reducing my local environmental footprint. To ensure my international placement aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 and goal 12, I am implementing a series of pragmatic, resource-efficient measures before and during my stay.

This environmentally conscious approach begins with my transit strategy. Acknowledging the geographical distance, I am actively prioritizing the most direct routing possible to minimize layovers and am exploring options to carbon-offset the flights. Furthermore, I am utilizing rail networks for internal travel ahead of the semester to reduce unnecessary regional flights. Upon arrival in Aberdeen, my daily commute will rely on walking.

Beyond transport, I will consistently apply a circular mindset to my consumption habits. For instance, I plan to purchase all my required textbooks second hand and ensure they are sold or passed on once I have completed my courses. As a student in a new country, I will also adapt my food consumption to match Scotland´s local food culture. This will be achieved by prioritizing seasonal and regionally sourced produce.

Finally, I will actively strive to share the knowledge I have acquired about eco-smart choices during my time as a student. Without education and the active dissemination of information on sustainable practices, achieving meaningful change within our societies and existing structures will simply not be possible.

In today´s society, eco-smart alternatives are frequently more expensive than less sustainable options. Therefore, receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous support, providing the necessary financial viability to successfully bridge the gap between intent and action and to fully execute the sustainable measures outlined above.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship, and I look forward to contributing positively to the University of Aberdeen this autumn.
