Sustainability Beyond Borders

It is evident that travel poses many benefits: learning about other cultures, challenging perspectives and stereotypes and building meaningful global connections. However, it is also a privilege, and as such we must ensure that that the benefits of cultural exchange do not come at the expense of other people or the planet. Therefore, we need to approach travel ethically and responsibly.
Sustainability has always been a guiding principle in my life. In 2023, I completed the Cambridge HE+ Research Programme, where I investigated the causes and impacts of global warming and the importance of sustainable development. Since then I have continued to engage in environmental initiatives such as beach clean-ups, sustainability campaigning, and writing blogs for my university’s Students’ Guild to raise awareness about sustainable practices on campus. In my daily life, I also make conscious choices to reduce my environmental impact by walking or cycling where possible and avoiding fast fashion and single-use plastics through reusable and second-hand alternatives.
During my study abroad, I intend to continue applying these practices in addition to taking extra measures to protect the environment and local people. To become better informed about ways I can do this, I completed a sustainability literacy test to identify gaps in my knowledge, and have further educated myself on responsible consumption, climate-conscious travel, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities ,SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) .
Although international travel will be necessary for my study placement, I plan to minimise my carbon emissions by avoiding any additional flights and instead relying on public transport, walking, or cycling whenever possible. I will aim to live close to my placement location to reduce unnecessary travel and emissions, whilst also being mindful of my energy and water usage on a daily basis.
Additionally, I believe sustainability involves responsible consumption. I plan to reduce single-use plastics by carrying reusable items such as a water bottle and shopping bags as well as making a conscious effort to support local businesses and buy locally sourced food wherever possible in order to contribute positively to the local economy and reduce the environmental impact associated with imported goods.
Sustainable travel is not only environmental but also social and cultural. I have already looked into volunteer and community engagement opportunities in my study abroad town, where I hope to interact respectfully with local customs, learn from the community, and contribute positively through collaboration and knowledge exchange during my placement.
Overall, I see sustainability as a responsibility that should guide both everyday choices and international experiences. By remaining informed and making conscious decisions throughout my placement, I hope to ensure that my experience is as environmentally and socially responsible as possible.
