for every hour i walk,
a kilo of carbon in the air i save.
for every train journey home,
5.2 kilos of carbon in the air i save.
for a year of meat-free mondays,
100 kilos of carbon in the air i save.
for,
every effort i make
protects my home, my planet, my place,
easing the sense of heartbreak
looming over my head,
of which i can’t erase.
amongst the doom and gloom though,
behind each climate protest,
with every effort,
is the power of reduction in each kilo
and their beholders,
just trying their best.
for every hour i walk,
for each kilo i save,
i remember every glimmer,
every sparkle,
even drizzle,
i’ve been privileged enough to see.
in only 20 years
a girl like me has seen
only things somebody in 2050
may dream.
a kilo in its simplicity,
fosters a mission i share,
to save my minutes on this planet
battling what is invisible in the air.
for every kilo i save,
i know its very worth.
although i am only one,
i am part of a wave,
of people on this earth
aware of every tonne.
so that is why i walk,
i train,
i meat-free monday,
not solely for the kilo,
but for the continuation of day-glow.
